Issue No. 6 - June 2026 |
Dear Friends,
June has officially arrived, bringing with it the effortless, slow-paced energy of summer. This is the season when our homes truly open up. The boundaries between indoors and outdoors blur, and our focus naturally shifts toward hospitality—creating welcoming spaces where friends and family can gather, linger, and connect.
Whether you are hosting an intimate dinner party on the patio or inviting neighbors in for evening drinks, a well-designed home should support the flow of modern entertaining. This month, we’re taking you inside a unique walk-out basement project that serves as the ultimate hosting destination. We’re also sharing our favorite design strategies for elevating your summer hosting spaces, both inside and out.
Pour a cool drink, settle in, and let's explore how to design a home that is always ready for a gathering.
Warmly, Colleen

Inside the Project: The Sophisticated Lower-Level Lounge
When our clients approached us with their walk-out basement, they weren't looking for the typical bright-and-white lower level. Instead, they envisioned an entertaining hub with depth—a space that felt less like a basement and more like a high-end, tailored lounge.
The Vision: We leaned into a rich, warm palette to create an authentic "bourbon room" atmosphere, while utilizing the natural light of the walk-out architecture to keep the space from feeling subterranean. It is the perfect balance of moody ambiance and architectural openness.
Key Design Elements:
A Tailored Palette: We paired deep, grounded tones with rich wood grains and tactile fabrics, creating an immediate sense of warmth and intimacy the moment you step downstairs.
The Statement Bar: The centerpiece of the design is a custom bar built for hosting, featuring meticulous millwork, stunning stone countertops, and curated open shelving to display the client's collection.
Layered Lighting: To capture that exclusive lounge feeling, we relied heavily on ambient lighting—think low-glow sconces, under-cabinet lighting, and warm fixtures that create a soft, inviting glow as evening falls.
The result is a sophisticated retreat that effortlessly flows out to the patio for summer nights, but feels cocooning and cozy year-round.
3 Essentials for the Ultimate Summer Entertaining Space
Hosting during the summer months requires a thoughtful balance of beauty and functionality. Whether you are refreshing a dining room or prepping your patio, keep these three design pillars in mind:
Establish a Dedicated Drink Station: To keep traffic flowing smoothly, separate the beverage area from the main kitchen or food spread. A beautiful wet bar, a styled console table, or even a curated bar cart allows guests to serve themselves without crowding the host.
Prioritize Performance Fabrics: Summer entertaining should feel relaxed, not stressful. Opt for high-quality, high-performance fabrics on heavy-use seating. Today’s luxury performance textiles look and feel like fine linen or textured cotton but can easily handle wet swimsuits, accidental spills, and heavy foot traffic.
Design for Low-Level Evening Lighting: As afternoon sun turns into twilight, the right lighting sets the entire mood. Indoors, turn off overhead lights and rely on dimmable sconces and small cordless lamps. Outdoors, utilize warm landscape lighting, lanterns, or clean-lined fire features to create an inviting glow that coaxes guests to stay a little longer.
Design Q&A: Connecting Indoor and Outdoor HostingQ: We love to entertain both in our main living area and out on our patio during the summer. How can we make these two separate spaces feel cohesive rather than disjointed?

A: The secret to a flawless indoor-outdoor flow is visual continuity. When a guest looks through your glass doors or steps outside, the transition should feel like a natural extension of your home’s interior architecture. To achieve this, look at your materials and color palette. If your indoor living room features soft neutrals, warm wood tones, and unlacquered brass, carry those exact elements out to the patio. Opt for outdoor furniture with refined wood frames rather than generic metal, and choose outdoor cushions in the same color family as your indoor textiles. Additionally, consider your flooring transition. Aligning the direction of your indoor flooring with your outdoor decking or stone pavers creates a strong visual line that pulls the eye outward, making both spaces feel grander and entirely unified. |
